Parkstead House – A brief history
Designed in the 1760's by Sir William Chambers, who also designed Somerset House and the Pagoda in Kew Gardens, this Palladian style villa was commissioned by the 2nd Earl of Bessborough to display his classical sculpture collection and to entertain his guests away from busy and crowded Central London.
The Villa was acquired by the Society of Jesus in 1860 and was renamed the House Manresa. A beautiful chapel, fashioned on the Italian Renaissance style with Marble pilasters, soaring sky-lit coffered domes and a barrel vaulted nave ceiling was later added, along with three storey brickwork wings to form a large imposing Victorian courtyard at the back.
Parkstead House today
In 2001 it was bought by Whitelands College, Roehampton University and they have worked with English Heritage to restore it to it's full former glory and parts of the original temples that were at Parkstead have been rebuilt, again offering unique wedding photography opportunities, though of course many additional modern buildings for teaching and accommodation have also been added which sit beside the old and ancient.
Today Parkstead House is a Grade 1 listed Georgian Villa and as well as making a stunning London wedding venue it has been featured in many TV series, dramas and documentaries including Spooks, The Bill, The IT Crowd and The Brontes.
