Situated in the Well Hall Pleasaunce, Tudor Barn Eltham was built in the 16th century, probably around 1525, (though occupancy of the site goes as far back as 1253) and has historical connections with King Henry VIII and the Tudor Monarchy at nearby Eltham Palace.

 

Tudor Barn Eltham London - brief history

Well Hall was used as a prep school from 1880-90 and the school bell from that period now hangs on one of the barn's gables. It was also the home to the author of The Railway Children Edith Nesbit who lived there from 1899 to 1920. Nesbit who along with her husband were also founders of the Fabian Society (the purpose of which was to advance the principles of socialism) were regularly visited by such literary and political luminaries as HG Wells and George Bernard Shaw.

In 1930 Well Hall was purchased by Woolwich Borough Council which restored the barn, the ground floor becoming a restaurant, the first floor an art gallery whilst the 2nd floor was removed completely. The gardens meanwhile were redeveloped and opened to the general public. With National Lottery funding Greenwich council restored many of the original historical features of the park and in 2000 further funds were secured to include the barn.

Today as a fully restored Grade 11 Listed building , Tudor Barn Eltham is a popular wedding and conference and party venue.

 

Tudor Barn Eltham wedding photography opportunities

The wedding ceremony and reception all takes place in the long and narrow 1st floor gallery and can seat up to 150 guests. With its white walls and original oak beams, it provides the wedding photographer with a truly unique London wedding venue full of character and interesting photographic opportunities.

For the group wedding photographs and for general reportage photography there is the front lawn and a shot of everyone at the wedding can be taken from either a window from the first floor gallery or from the small wall on the other side of the lawn, depending on where the sun is shining.

The venue with its thirteen acres of beautiful parkland is a wonderful place to take the newlyweds off for some romantic wedding pictures away from the madding reception crowd. Complete with some 240 trees and lovely pathways there are many other interesting features to take the wedding couple to including fountains, streams and the bridge over the moat, all of which provide wonderful backdrops for some truly memorable wedding photography.
