Starting as a school church in 1866 the congregation grew rapidly to over 600 with a special Children's service on Sunday for over 800 partly due to the building of the railways with Peckham Rye station having been built opposite. Finally built from 1870 - 72 it was made from Bath stone in a style similarly used in the 13th century. Surviving the war by the early 1990's the congregation had shrunk and the building was to be demolished until a new vicar, from the Holy Trinity Brompton church gave it a renewed bust of life.
For the London wedding photographer, the church offers opportunities for wedding photographs throughout the service though the windows along the walls are low down, with narrow ones behind the altar so there isn’t plenty of natural light. The aisles down the sides of the church allow easy access from front to bottom and though the walls and arches are bare and white there is some ornate tiling behind the altar, though the ceiling shows recent water damage. For group wedding shots the garden at the front is rather overgrown but at the back of the church in the small car park the natural Bath stone walls do provide a pleasant background.

Nick and Olga, Upper Norwood, London – Wedding at All Saints Church, Upper Norwood and Gautama Bar, Crystal Palace, London
All Saints Church was built from 1827-9 as Upper Norwood was becoming fashionable and large houses and villas were being built. It was badly damaged in 2nd World War bombing and later restored in 1954.
Painted by the artist Camille Pissarro in 1871, the church is a graceful building and makes a great, calming backdrop for a wedding photographer. Its large churchyard is shaded by numerous trees, again good for wedding photographs and it has a memorial to Robert Fitzroy (1805–1865), captain of HMS Beagle, (who invited Charles Darwin to accompany him on his voyage), became the first governor of New Zealand, and inventor of the shipping forecast and lived on Church Road.

|
Namali and Kennedy, Purley, Surrey - Wedding photography at Clapham Methodist Church and Selsdon Park Hotel, Croydon, Surrey
The original Clapham Methodist Church was built on this site in 1894, a magnificent building with its tall spire that seated 1000 people catering for the wealthy classes as well as all the people from the notorious slums of Nelson’s Row. In 1940 bombs severely damaged the building to the extent that it needed to be demolished and it was rebuilt and opened in 1961, this time as a modern redbrick building. In 2010 an extension to the church, providing a meeting area, brought the building alongside the shop fronts of all the various restaurants and other commercial premises.
For a wedding photographer, the inside of the Clapham Methodist Church has a modernist feel about it, with its plain, minimalist white walls and ceiling and rows of grey plastic chairs. It offers plenty of natural light for wedding photography throughout the service along with a balcony at the rear to offer some overall shots of the service and congregation. Passageways along the sides allow for easy access and the clergy here are very relaxed regarding the taking of wedding photographs by professional wedding photographers and the beautiful golden screen provides a glittering backdrop for the signing of the register.

Jessie and Stuart, Colliers Wood, London – Wedding at Westminster Register Office and Firecracker, London
In the heart of Westminster this dark, but enticing basement restaurant is an unusual reception venue for a wedding photographer, having no natural light, so a lot of the wedding photographs will be using flash lighting, but it’s a stylish place nonetheless.
Offering four rooms with a contemporary backdrop of floral wallpaper, wooden latticing, mirrors, red lighting, red bamboo tower mobiles (well, that’s our name for them) it’s perfect for informal, reportage wedding photography. If you get to stay on longer you could be treated for the karaoke, which it’s renowned for, but we didn’t stay so we were treated with a soothing string quartet.

The Haymarket Hotel, Piccadilly was designed by John Nash, the architect of Regency London. It is now a trendy boutique/hip style hotel which brings a mix of the contemporary with the classical thanks to its designer Kit Kemp and is a unique venue for modern, contemporary wedding photography. The lobby has been likened to being more of a stage set of a hotel than a hotel itself and is an airy open space decorated with black, white and yellows and featuring a stainless steel work of art by Tony Cragg along with a black and white landscape painting by John Virtue, all of which make wonderful backdrops for a wedding photographer.
You can hold your wedding ceremony in the Shooting Gallery (40 to 90 guests) and celebrate after in the glorious hotel surroundings. Charlotte & Chris, Hearne Hill, London – Wedding at Holy Trinity Brompton & Ognisko Polish Club, Kensington, London
Holy Trinity Brompton is a Grade ll listed building and was consecrated in 1829 and all almost eclipsed by the dominant London Oratory which was built after the Church sold some of its land to the Roman Catholic Church. This in turn created a long driveway from the Brompton Road to the Holy Trinity Church providing a tranquil setting in what is a very busy and popular area.
There was major transformation in the 1980s to cater for the substantial growth of the Alpha course which has become the main focus there. A very large, well lit and welcoming building inside, it offers plenty of opportunities for a couple of wedding photographers: a photographer on floor level and another upstairs offers the ultimate in wedding photography coverage. As well as substantial grounds outside for the group wedding photographs there are lots of interesting areas and backdrops to take the newly-weds for some more personal wedding photos including the V&A and Harrods.

The Old Bank of England is a beautifully renovated pub situated in the former law courts of the Bank of England. During the 16th and 17th centuries, two taverns (The Cock and The Haunch of Venison) stood on the site but both were demolished in 1888, making way for the construction of the Law Courts' branch of the Bank of England and in 1994, Fuller's took over the lease, restoring the building to its former glory. The Old Bank of England allegedly lies between the site of the Sweeny Todd’s barber shop and Mrs. Lovett’s pie shop. It is said to be in the tunnels and vaults below the building that Sweeney Todd’s victims were butchered - before being cooked and sold in pies to Mrs. Lovett’s unsuspecting customers. For wedding receptions, it can accommodate guests in the bar whilst the Club and Dining Rooms open as one room with space for 40 diners on the mezzanine level and overlooks the bar.The venue is great for smallish parties and the lack of any natural light necessitates flash for a lot of the wedding photography. Looking down from the balcony to the reception can provide some atmospheric wedding photographs.

Pantechnicon vans, which were drawn by horses, were designed with sloping ramps to more easily load furniture with the building name on the side
Originally opened around 1830 and combined a picture gallery, and a furniture shop or warehouse and was built with a Greek style Doric column façade, and called Pantechnicon, Greek for "pertaining to all the arts or crafts". Clients required storage facilities and special wagons, subsequently called Pantechnicon vans, which were drawn by horses, were designed with sloping ramps to more easily load furniture with the building name on the side. The warehouse itself was destroyed by fire in 1876 but the usefulness of the vans was by then well established and they had been adopted by other firms. From around 1900, the name was shortened to simply Pantechnicon.
Situated in the heart of fashionable Mayfair this venue is set on four levels and offers the wedding photographer a light, vintage contemporary environment for the afternoons wedding photographs. The Front Room offers dining for up to 20 seated guests, the whole First Floor up to 46 seated guests or 80 standing, The Private Dining Room, up to 14 seated guests and The Loft up to 25 standing. The Sacred Heart Church in Wimbledon was built through the generosity of Edith Arendrup, a member of the wealthy Courtauld family and the nave opened in 1887 with the church finally being completed in 1901.Situated in a prominent position on the slopes of Edge Hill, the Grade II listed building was designed in the late Decorated Gothic style, with its tall slender columns, pointed arches, ribbed vaults and flying buttress’s.
The church is beautiful inside with plenty of natural light and with a gallery at the back which is great for the wedding photographer to capture, those atmospheric, once in a life time wedding photographs. We like working at the Sacred Heart, it’s a relaxed and very welcoming church and Richard’s granny used to walk there for mass from her home in Wimbledon Chase.

The original church of St Barnabas was destroyed by fire on the morning of 7th December1992 and was replaced in 1996 with a strikingly modern designed building, built on an octagonal floor plan around a central altar.Over the altar is a glass spire, built around a stainless steel frame, which lets down light into the heart of the Church during the day, and is illuminated from within at night. This church is good for a wedding photographer due to plenty of natural light and a spacious layout inside and though there isn’t much garden area at the front, we have used it for the group wedding photographs which worked well.

Peter and Patricia, London – Wedding at St Clement Danes Church & Ye Old Cock Tavern, Fleet Street London
St. Clement Danes derives its name from the earliest church to stand on the site, founded by descendants of the Danish invaders in the 9th century.Rebuilt in 1680¬-82 by Sir Christopher Wren but damaged by bombing in 1941, Dr. Samuel Johnson was a regular member of the congregation and during the 17th to 19th centuries many people were buried in the crypt. The chain hanging on the crypt wall was used to secure the coffin lids against body-snatchers.Since 1958 St Clement Danes has served as the central church of the RAF.
The nave and aisles have the crests of hundreds of RAF squadrons and there are over 700 squadron badges in slate set into the floor and the balcony allows for some truly atmospheric wedding photography.Outside the church there is also a nice space for more formal wedding photographs close to the statues of Lord Dowding, victor of the Battle of Britain, and Sir Arthur (Bomber) Harris, Marshall of the RAF.All in all, an oasis of calm in a busy part of town makes this a great little venue for a wedding photographer.

Lisa and Richard, Highgate, London – Wedding at St Joseph's Church, Highgate and The Crown Moran Hotel, London
St. Joseph's Church, at the top of Highgate Hill is a listed building and described by English Heritage as outstanding.Indeed this large building (146 feet long and more than 55 feet wide) is beautiful inside and offers a wealth of potential for a wedding photographer. The dome is estimated to weigh 2,000 tons with its supporting brickwork, and is 130 feet above the level of the cross of St. Paul's.
At ground level or from the balcony at the back the view is awe inspiring and great for truly atmospheric wedding photography. One of the key features is the baldachino, or canopy, over the high altar and the altar piece is made from Sicilian marble. The mosaic pavement in the sanctuary is made from material taken from the bed of the River Severn, and is reputed to be more durable and more costly than marble. Group wedding photographs can easily be taken in the beautiful Waterlow Park which is a minute away just across the road.

St. Luke’s South Norwood

xx, Wimbledon, London – Wedding at ...London
St. Luke’s Church South Norwood was built in stages from 1887, but the building was largely destroyed by fire in 1920. The present church dates largely from 1927 (although it incorporates elements of the earlier building), and is a Grade II Listed building. For the wedding photographer this is a pleasant venue to work in: when we last worked there it was a dull and overcast day yet there was still plenty of natural light inside and the wide aisles down each side of the building allow you to discretely move around the church, allowing some atmospheric wedding photography throughout the wedding ceremony. The Church is on the corner of busy Portland Road and Spring Lane so there are no grounds for the group wedding photographs though there are a couple of green areas nearby if the reception venue isn’t an option.

Kristy and Ian, West Norwood, London - Wedding at St. Luke's Church, West Norwood, London and Bickley Manor Hotel, Kent
St. Luke's Church, West Norwood was built in 1822 at a time when the surrounding area was almost completely rural.Standing in a prominent triangular site at the end of Norwood Road, this Grade ll Listed building with it's impressive main front, has a stone portico with six fluted columns and a tower that rises in three stages from the roof. Extensive changes were made to the inside in the 1870's and in 1945 the churchyard was given to Lambeth Council and converted into a memorial garden to those lost in the Second World War.In 2005 the original box pews were replaced by red chairs.
For the wedding photographer, the white and cream walled interior and the large windows down both sides provide plenty of light to capture wedding photographs throughout the service. In addition the very friendly Reverend Donald Davis has no restrictions on wedding photography and is himself a bit of a photography enthusiast.Outside under the columns also offers plenty of space for any group wedding photographs as do the memorial gardens.

St. Mark's sits in the centre of Wimbledon High Street and is a modern church building with a light and spacious interior and the stunning stained glass windows with their brightly coloured geometrical patterns form a wonderful backdrop for wedding photographs. Outside there are a number of options for the wedding photographer: the cobbles, the car park and the path around the back of the church offer varied backdrops for further wedding photography: confetti, group shots and the Bride and Grooms portrait shots. If time allows there is also Wimbledon Common which is only at the top of Wimbledon Hill.

A church has stood on this site since before the Domesday Book and St. Mary's Church Merton, a Grade II listed country church was founded by the Augustinian Canons who also founded Merton Priory.Parts of the present building date back to 1115, the roof of the nave is nearly 900 years old and that of the chancel dates from 1400 whilst the two aisles were built in the last century to accommodate the population explosion.
St Mary's lies in a quiet and historic corner of south west London, in the heart of the Merton Park conservation area, an attractive garden suburb laid out to the designs of John Innes, the famous horticulturist and philanthropist. For the wedding photographer, lighting can be an issue as with many small, very old churches, the lighting can be restricted but there are still some great atmospheric wedding photography opportunities on offer. The path to the front door on a sunny day offers wonderful opportunities for some stunning lit wedding photographs, especially of the confetti throwing. The church also has links to many past famous people: the tomb of Rear Admiral Issac Smith, the first Englishman to land in Australia is situated there, there’s a monument by the widow of Captain Cook, also Lord Nelson's seat - he worshipped regularly at this church towards the end of his life and Edward Rayne (of Raynes Park) is buried in the South Aisle.

St Mary's Church, Wimbledon, with its notably visible 196 feet tower and spire has existed in 4 distinct guises since the 12th century; The Medieval Church — 11th century to 13th century; The Second Church — Late 13th century until 1786; The Georgian Church — 1780s to 1840s; and The Victorian Church to present which was completed in 1843. Designed in the Victorian era by Sir George Gilbert Scott with a strict budget of £4000, he succeeded in doing so by incorporating parts of the earlier building which are still visible today. Points of interest include two of the stained glass windows which were made by William Morris & Co; The "Leper Window", low on the south side of the Chancel, a small barred aperture believed to have been used in medieval times to administer the sacrament to diseased people outside; and in the Churchyard there is the Mausoleum of Sir Joseph Bazalgette, the Engineer responsible for London’s sewerage system and also the construction of the Thames embankments.
For the wedding photographer, this wonderfully large church has a balcony which offers opportunities for dramatic wedding photography with its discrete, bird’s eye view of the wedding ceremony. Whilst outside in the church grounds, there are a number of pleasant areas for the group wedding photographs and for us, the blue painted doors, especially on the side, provide a distinctly colourful and sheltered backdrop.

Freya and Jason, Kensington, London – Wedding at St. Mary The Boltons and Bramham Gardens, London
St Mary The Boltons was built in 1850 as a speculative gamble on behalf of a wealthy landowner. He wanted a church to lend an air of respectability to attract house purchasers as he sought to change the use of his land from market gardening to housing. It appears, that certainly in the long term, the gamble paid off as the church now stands in an area of immense wealth with vast properties, know as ‘ice bergs’ where the trend is to build down to construct super basements.A lovely looking church, set in an oasis of calming trees and gardens, wedding photography is restricted inside, as wedding photographers have to stay at the back throughout the service, but all is not lost as there is an accessible balcony from which you can get dramatic and atmospheric wedding photographs of the ceremony.

St. Pancras Old Church
St. Pancras Old Church, Pancras Rd, Camden, London NW1 1UL Phone: 020 7419 6679
|

St Pancras Old Church is believed to be one of the oldest sites of Christian worship in England and is dedicated to the Roman martyr Saint Pancras, although the building itself is largely Victorian. Documentary evidence for the early history of the church is scanty, but it is believed to have existed since A.D. 314. Remnants of medieval features and references in the Domesday Book suggest it pre-dates the Norman Conquest.
For a wedding photographer, the church and the grounds offer lots of exciting wedding photography opportunities: Charles Dickens mentions it by name in his 1859 novel A Tale of Two Cities, making it the location of body-snatching to provide corpses for dissection at medical schools, a common practice at the time in the mid-1860s, while in 28 July 1968 the Beatles were photographed in the churchyard grounds, in a famous series of pictures designed to promote the single "Hey Jude" and the White album.
And for some particular historical backdrops for wedding photographs with a difference, there is the mausoleum designed by the architect Sir John Soane for his wife and himself and now Grade I listed which provided the inspiration for the design of the iconic red telephone box by Giles Gilbert Scott; and the unusual Hardy Tree, growing between gravestones, moved while Thomas Hardy was working there on the construction of the Midland Railway's London terminus.

St. Stephen's Walbrook

With the site dating back to Roman times, St. Stephen’s Walbrook has an extremely rich history.During the Great Fire of London in 1666 it was burnt to the ground and Sir Christopher Wren replaced the ruined 15th Century edifice with the present building between1672-79.
Regarded as one of Sir Christopher Wren's smaller masterpieces, this church has been immaculately restored in recent years and with the central altar by Henry Moore it’s a unique venue for a wedding photographer. When lit by a multitude of candles the beautiful interior architecture becomes a very special space – truly unique and a venue for truly striking wedding photographs. Also of interest is the fact it was the birthplace of The Samaritans and a telephone in a glass box can be found within the church, a tribute to the Rector, Prebendary Dr Chad Varah, who founded the voluntary organisation for people in emotional need.

Sian and Joe Tobin, Fulham, London – Wedding at Fulham Palace and The Star and Garter, Putney, London
The Star and Garter was first noted on the Map of Putney in 1787 and it’s Northern Renaissance and Queen Anne influence has undergone many transformations over the years. First built as a hotel for the use of the boating and sailing community it originally had a boathouse on the ground floor.
Situated on the banks of the Thames by Putney Bridge the venue offers the wedding photographer a variety of interesting options for some refreshing wedding photography: The ceremony, wedding breakfast and after celebrations take place in the wonderful two-tiered ballroom on the first floor with its abundance of natural light from its full height windows and views over the Thames.
In between changes, reception drinks take place downstairs in the modern wine lounge below and further wedding photographs can also be taken outside on The Thames Path with views over the river and nearby Putney Bridge. The building is situated just past the University stone, which marks the start of the Annual Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race and the Ballroom offers a grandstand setting overlooking the pre-race proceedings. The name ‘Star and Garter’ relates to the Order of the Garter, the Star being worn pinned to the left breast and the Garter being worn on ceremonial occasions around the left calf by knights and around the left arm by ladies.

Westminster Register Office, also known as Old Marylebone Town Hall, came number 6 in The Independent’s 10 most romantic places to marry and it has been the venue of choice for countless celebrities. Paul McCartney married Linda there in the 60’s, Liam Gallagher married both his wives here (Patsy Kensit and then Nicole Appleton) and the list goes on - it’s simply a great venue for lovely, classic, reportage wedding photography.A large, imposing building with its mighty pillars at the top of the stone steps (the steps are popular for the confetti throwing and group wedding photographs) it is situated on the busy Marylebone Road.Inside, its imposing marble entrance hall and staircase leads to wooden paneled corridors and a choice of four marriage rooms: The Yellow Room, which holds 20 guests, the Blue Room (30 guests), the Purple Room (80 guests) and the grand, wood panelled Reception Room which holds 100 guests. A great atmosphere, loved by the stars and with photogenic architecture all thrown in for the wedding photographer.
