Situated in exclusive South Kensington off Exhibition Road, 58 Prince's Gate is owned by Imperial College London and is an exclusive private London wedding venue perfect for after wedding ceremony receptions. From a wedding photographer’s perspective it's worth noting that the Brompton Oratory, Little Brompton Oratory and the HTB (Holy Trinity Brompton) church are all just round the corner on the Brompton Road.
58 Prince's Gate - brief history and architecture
58 Prince's Gate was built around 1856 by Charles Freake, a famous architect and builder responsible for many famous west London facades. The style of his houses could be called Italiante 'stucco classic' terraces, with their columned porticoes, five storeys above a basement and three windows wide. At 58 Princes Street the entrance hall , staircase and Billiard – room are very well preserved, the hall with its Beaux-Arts styling is particularly striking with its moulded panels, elaborately sculpted over-doors and ornate 18th Century style plaster ceiling and divided from the stairwell with a screen of fluted green marble columns. He famously would only permit straight chimneys in all his buildings as he heard that a cancerous condition prevalent in child chimney sweeps was caused by them crawling up chimneys. His straight chimneys allowed the brush to clean the whole chimney and so prevented the premature death of many Victorian children.
58 Prince's Gate wedding photographer opportunities
There are five rooms available for wedding receptions and all of which are great for capturing classic wedding photographs: The College Room, bright and airy is the smallest with a capacity of up to 12 wedding guests; The Garden Room, which overlooks the pleasant and leafy Prince’s Gardens is one of the largest with up to 36 dining guests and up to 70 for a stand up reception; The Patio, for up to 30 guests is perfect for fine summer days with its alfresco dining facilities; The Ballroom for up to 32 guests and The Billiard Room which is an adaptable area and has a capacity for up to 32 seated guests and 50 for a buffet reception. Finally there is the Oak Room, with its oak panelling and antique furniture which provides an ideal area for the Bride and Groom to charge their batteries, have a few romantic wedding photographs or to use as a changing room.
For the wedding photographer the small size of these well-appointed and classic wedding venues means that the informal reportage wedding photography will be very personal and if the group wedding photographs haven’t been taken at the Churches beforehand then there are the Prince’s Gardens which provide a pleasant green backdrop for the rest of the proceedings.
