The Royal Horseguards, One Whitehall Place – A brief history
Whitehall Court was built as a block of luxury residential apartments between 1882 – 1887 by the property developer and Liberal MP Jabez Balfour, a man who later was to be found out as a fraudster having masterminded a Ponzi style building and savings scam through his Liberator Building Society which was to collapse in 1892 leaving thousands of penniless investors.
Built originally for the National Liberal Club for the purpose of helping promote Liberal interests throughout Britain, especially those of William Gladstone, Prime Minister on four separate occasions and who resigned as leader of the party in 1874 aged 84 after a 60 year career.
During both World Wars the building was taken over by the Ministry of Defence and was used by both MI5 and MI6. In 1971 it opened as a hotel and in 1985 it acquired 140 bedrooms from the adjoining National Liberal Club at One Whitehall Place and today this impressive Neo-Gothic building modelled on a French Chateau has Grade 1 listed status and is part 5-star hotel with wedding and function rooms as well as luxury residential apartments.
Famous residents have included the writers H.G.Wells, George Bernard Shaw and Sarah Caudwell and the Labour politician Stafford Cripps and in 1983 the hotel was featured in the Bond film Octopussy.
